James River Pediatrics

About Us
Dr. John Zachary founded James River Pediatrics in 1986 and continues to provide our community with personalized, exceptional pediatric care.
With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Zachary has been a beloved and trusted figure in the pediatric community. From welcoming newborns in the hospital to now caring for the children of those very same babies, he represents the heart of our practice — a true example of generational care and dedication. Families don’t just visit our office — they return, year after year, because they know they’re part of something more personal.
In October of 2022, Dr. Christine Jones joined our James River Pediatric family. With years of experience in the fast-paced environment of the Chippenham Pediatric Emergency Room, she has brought a calm, skilled, and reassuring presence to every patient and family encounter. Her background allows her to approach pediatric care with both urgency and empathy, making her a vital asset to our growing practice.

Reviews
See what our happy families have to say
I started by asking other moms and checking online reviews. After calling around and doing some research, I narrowed it down to three practices that I wanted to visit in person. I had a list of questions and wanted to get a feel for each place before deciding.
James River was my second stop. From the moment I walked in, everyone was warm, friendly, and informative. They didn’t make me feel like I was a burden for asking questions. The front desk staff and nurses I’ve interacted with have all been incredibly kind and helpful.
The office might feel a bit dated to some, but for me, it gave off a nostalgic vibe. There’s a designated toy area, plus separate areas for sick and well visits. It has that old-school, hometown warmth that’s hard to find these days.
Our well visit went smoothly.
Since then, I’ve had two sick visits one with Dr. Zach and one with Dr. Christine, who is now my child’s primary pediatrician. I really appreciated the chance to see both providers, and both experiences were great.
What stood out most with Dr. Christine was her approach. While I’m not anti-medicine, I do prefer more natural or holistic remedies when possible. We stay up to date with necessary vaccines but opt out of things like the COVID and flu shots. In the past, I’ve felt judged for advocating for what I believe is best for my child. During our sick visit, which was actually a follow-up after my child’s dad took her to the ER and she was given a steroid and if necessary she could get a 2nd dose which I was against (2 doses of steroid In week if unnecessary ) I expected to have to explain my preference to avoid more medication. But before I even said anything, Dr. Christine reassured me she noted that since my daughter had already been given a steroid and all tests were negative, there was no need for another dose. She recommended natural treatments and even advised against unnecessary over the counter meds, which I completely agreed with.
Our visit with Dr. Zach was also wonderful. We were there for an issue we’d dealt with many times before at previous providers. What I appreciated was how he took the time to explain everything in detail, even though I was already familiar. He went over preventative steps and offered helpful tips. Through my own research over the years, I knew most of what he said and was already implementing it — but it meant a lot that he took the time to educate rather than assume. No other doctor had ever done that for us.
All in all, I give James River Pediatrics an A. I truly look forward to continuing our relationship with this practice. Finding a provider who listens, respects your parenting choices, and offers thoughtful care is rare and I’m so glad we landed here.
